Daniel Master, Tel Shimron

Dr. Daniel Master, Wheaton College

Daniel Master (PhD, Harvard University), Professor of Archaeology at Wheaton College, talks with David Capes about how he became an archaeologist.  He has spent much of his career digging up, processing, and writing archaeological reports on Ashkelon.  In recent days he and his dig partners from various institutions have turned their trowels to Tel Shimron, a large archaeological site just north of the Jezreel Valley about 8 miles west of Nazareth.  Despite Covid-19, the excavation had a full season in 2021.  If you want more information about Tel Shimron, check out the website: www.telshimronexcavations.com.  Dr. Master is always looking for volunteers.  If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at archaeology, why not spent three or six weeks in Israel next summer? Shame and Guilt in Psalm 32–Roche Coleman

Roche Coleman is Senior Pastor of the Impact Church in the Woodlands.  He is a frequent patron at the library; in fact, he just finished his PhD at the University of Pretoria spending a good bit of time studying and writing at the Lanier Theological Library.  He joins David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” to talk about his ministry and to talk about his dissertation which we think soon will become a book.  Shame and guilt are “strange emotions” according to Dr. Coleman precisely because they go against the grain of the imago dei(image of God) in us.  We are made for honor and dignity, yet we find shame and guilt to be a debilitating duo when it comes to our lives.  Psalm 32, a Davidic psalm, is written against the backdrop of a time when the king faced soul-crushing guilt over his sin.  But even as it begins in pain; it ends in joy.  For those who struggle with the weight of sin, shame, and guilt, this podcast is for you.

Teeny Tykes and Tunes–Pamela Vandewalker

Pamela Vandewalker has an interesting job. She directs worship programming at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta, GA, a worshipping community of roughly 7000 people. She is the author of many books and a composer of about 75 hymns for children.  She stopped by recently to talk with David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” about her life, her battles with cancer, and how hymns fed her soul and encouraged her through the toughest battles of life.  She is a strong advocate of singing and making music in the homes because it imprints on the lives of our children. Churches can and should do more to train up parents in creating music makers not just music consumers at home.     Christianity Today, Timothy Dalrymple

    Dr. Timothy Dalrymple is the new CEO and Editor-in-chief of Christianity Today (CT). He has come to this position after a long and storied career as an elite gymnast, an academic, and a successful entrepreneur.  In fact, everything “Tim” Dalrymple has done smacks of excellence, greatness, creativity, and devotion to God.  Now in this new endeavor, he brings his many gifts to bear at a transitional moment for evangelicals in the west. Christianity Today was founded in the 1950s by Billy Graham to be a mouthpiece for evangelicalism.     “Then Sings My Soul”–Robert Morgan

    The Donelson Fellowship

    Robert Morgan, teaching pastor at the Donelson Fellowship in Nashville, TN, has authored more than twenty books.  He lectured at the Stone Chapel on August 21, 2021. While at the library, he talked with David Capes on “The Stone Chapel Podcasts” about his series, Then Sings My Soul published by Thomas Nelson, particularly the third volume in that series. Morgan has been dubbed “the dean of American hymnody” by our own Dr. Capes and is doing more than anyone we know to promote the singing of music old and new in our churches. Older people, he says, need to sing the latest music, and young people need to sing the legacy music. Rather than segregating traditional and contemporary services, which effectively creates different congregations, Morgan advocates for intergenerational worship and training young and old alike to appreciate the music o.
