Mark through Old Testament Eyes

Andy LePeau

Andy LePeau has been in academic publishing for many years with InterVarsity Press.  He is also a talented writer and the author of a new book with Kregel Academic entitled Mark through Old Testament Eyes.  He serves as series editor for this new background and application commentary called “Through Old Testament Eyes” and stops by to talk with David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” about the series and about some of the things he discovered about Mark’s Gospel after teaching it for over fifteen years. The book begins: “The New Testament writers were Old Testament people.”  He goes on to demonstrate the many ways the Old Testament shaped the minds and hearts of the first Christ followers. Centre for Muslim-Christian Studies, Oxford, England

Dr. Ida Glaser

Dr. Ida Glaser, International Academic Coordinator and Founding Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Muslim-Christian Studies, joins David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” to talk about her life and the mission of the Oxford Centre she and her husband, David Coffey, established.  They bring Muslims and Christians together in formal study to relate honestly, think rigorously, and explore their respective traditions and religious texts.  They have been involved with scholars, research, and public education for the last 12 years.  Their website is  https://www.cmcsoxford.org.

In 2020 they established a center in Houston which had many challenges during the Covid pandemic.  Still they have made some amazing connections and established key relationships. They have many on-line resources which are free and will deepen your understanding of your faith and the faiths of others.

Kevin Grasso, PhD

Kevin Grasso and Nick Messmer are co-founders of Biblingo.org, a website dedicated to helping people learn and retain Greek and Hebrew. Kevin stopped by to talk with David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” regarding their project and how their approach differs from other programs or website.  The bottom line is this: they draw from some of the best practices and literature on second language acquisition. Reckoning with Race–Vince Bacote

Dr. Vincent Bacote, Wheaton College

Dr. Vince Bacote, Associate Professor of Theology and Director of the Center for Applied Christian Ethics at Wheaton College, joins David Capes to talk about his new book, Reckoning with Race and Performing the Good News: In Search of a Better Evangelical Theology (Brill, 2020).  Dr. Bacote is interested in rehabilitating the evangelical movement when it comes to how racial minorities fit into its life.  For too long the good news, while central to evangelical theology and life, has not always been good for minorities.  The polarization now in the west is due in large part because majorities and minorities are speaking past each another rather than finding a place at the table for one another.  According to Bacote, theology and ethics belong together and are not separate spheres of life and thought.  After discussing the meaning of “racism” and “critical race theory,” Bacote offers concrete proposals for what serious Christians and a thoughtful church can do next.  To learn more about Dr. Vince Bacote and his work, go to his website http://www.vincentbacote.com.

Divine Attributes–Dr. John Peckham

Dr. John Peckham

Dr. John Peckham, professor of theology and Christian philosophy at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, is a fine young scholar, and he has written a new book entitled, Divine Attributes: Knowing the Covenantal God of Scripture (Baker Academic, 2021). He joins David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” to talk about his book which is a great contribution to knowing the God whom the church adores and worships.  Thoroughly immersed in Scripture, Peckham’s theology of God tackles tough questions and comes up with sobering and clear answers.  Does God change? Does God have emotions? Does God know everything, including the future? Is God all-powerful? Does everything that happens fit into God’s will? Is God entirely good and loving?  How can God be one and yet three persons?  This is a superb book, and Capes and Peckham had a great conversation.
