Interpreting the New Testament through Inscriptions

Dr. Clint Burnett

Clint Burnett (PhD, Boston University) joined David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” to talk about his new book Interpreting the New Testament through Inscriptions (Hendrickson Academic, 2020).  Dr. Burnett discusses what inscriptions are, what they tell us about the world of the New Testament, and how scholars go about dating them to the period.  There are a lot of places where the New Testament and inscriptions come together and Burnett covers them in his book.  Inscriptions related: to the title “Lord;” ancient banquets; imperial oaths and decrees from Caesar; benefactors/benefactresses and overseers; and—everyone’s favorite—calculating numbers and in particular 666 as the number of a man in Revelation.  There are over half a million inscriptions so far discovered in the ancient world and they tell us about the lives of the average individual.

Stewards of Eden, Sandra Richter

Dr. Sandra Richter, Westmont College

Sandra (‘Sandy’) Richter (PhD, Harvard) joined David Capes by Zoom to talk about her 2020 book The Stewards of Eden: What Scripture Says about the Environment and Why It Matters (IVP, 2020).  David and Sandy’s paths have crossed a number of times in meetings of Scripture scholars.  Much of what Sandy has thought and written about during her career has to do with creation and the fall (Genesis 1-3).  This book is no different, but it takes Sandy’s concerns about the environment to a new level.  Sandy hopes to awaken the sleeping giant, that is, the passion, energy and focus of evangelical Christians and churches, to understand and act consistently with Scripture and the gospel when it comes to the environment.  She has written what amounts to a biblical theology of environmental stewardship that demands a response.  She wants to move evangelicals past the politics to a courageous moral stance when it comes to God’s earth and everything in it

The Moses Way

Dr. Gib Allen and his wife, Tamie

Dr. Gib Allen joins David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” to discuss his new book The Moses Way: A Pastor-Directed Model to Address Conflict (2020).  “Gib” is a friend and patron of the Lanier Theological Library and has pastored churches for nearly 40 years in Arkansas and Texas.  Not long after beginning his ministry, he discovered that his seminary education had taught him little to nothing about how to deal with conflict in the church.  Over time he talked with leaders, read good books and has come up with an approach any pastor or church leader can follow in order to address conflict redemptively in the church. He does this with a careful reading of how Moses dealt with conflict with the children of Israel on the journey to the Promised Land. Whether you are a pastor or interested layperson, the chances are good your church has faced, is facing or will face conflict serious enough to rock the foundations (21 minutes).

After Doubt

Dr. A. J. Swoboda

Dr. A. J. Swoboda (PhD University of Birmingham), assistant professor of Bible, theology, and world Christianity, has written a terrific book for everyone who struggles with doubt.  It is called After Doubt: How to Question Your Faith without Losing It(Brazos Press, 2021).  He joins David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” to discuss what motivated him to write the book and what he has learned by walking with people who wrestle with doubt for the last twenty years.  Doubt and deconstruction are normal parts of the theological journey, he believes.  But ultimately, the journey does not have to end in “shipwreck.”  With the right guides and right disciplines, it is possible to stay on the journey with a stronger, more resilient  faith.  But there are no quick fixes or easy rides.

The Epistle to the Ephesians
