Bearing God’s Name

Dr. Carmen Imes, Prairie College

Dr. Carmen Joy Imes, Associate Professor of Old Testament at Prairie College in Alberta, Canada, joins David Capes to talk about her book, Bearing God’s Name: Why Sinai Still Matters (InterVarsity Press, 2019). While some Christian leaders want to disconnect from the Old Testament law, Dr. Imes thinks is it indispensable that we get back to Sinai in order to understand what God has been up to all along.  Without understanding Israel’s mission, we may miss our own.  Particularly, she makes a convincing case for what it means “to take the Lord’s name in vain.”  The story of Israel is the wilderness at Sinai is not ancient.  If we take it seriously, it is our story too.

What Does God Look Like?

Amy Allan, Wheaton College

Amy is a third year Old Testament Biblical Studies Ph.D. student at Wheaton College under the supervision of Dr. Michael Graves. Her research interests include patristic and rabbinic interpretations of Scripture, anthropomorphic language for God, Old Testament prophets, theology, literary characterization, rhetoric, and ancient Near Eastern culture. Amy completed her M.Div. at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri and is currently in the ordination discernment process at her local church. Her ministry flows from her own journey with Christ and includes advocating for the safety of abuse survivors, leading worship in multi-ethnic churches, anti-racism activism, care for the homeless, speaking in a variety of academic and ecclesial contexts, serving in programs for juvenile patients with cranio-facial anomalies, and finding creative ways to engage and honor Native American traditions.

Naming the Name of the Lord

Dr. Bill Mounce

Dr. Bill Mounce is the the founder and President of BiblicalTraining.org, and the author of a major commentary on Paul’s letters to Timothy and Titus. In a separate podcast titled “BiblicalTraining.org” we heard more of his life and work. In this episode he joins Dr. Capes to talk about the interpretation, translation, implications, and preaching of Paul’s reference to the “naming of the Name of the Lord” in 2 Tim. 2:19.

“Exegetically Speaking” is a weekly podcast of the friends and faculty of Wheaton College, IL and The Lanier Theological Library. How the Spirit Became God

Dr. Kyle Hughes

Kyle Hughes has written an important book, and he joins David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” to discuss it.  The book is How the Spirit Became God: The Mosaic of Early Christian Pneumatology (Cascade Books, 2020).  In this book Hughes tells a compelling story of how the church came to recognize the Spirit as divine and as a “person.”  With a firm grasp on relevant primary and second literature he makes the case for an early and consistent divine pneumatology arising out of how Christians over several centuries read their Scriptures, the Old and New Testaments.

Leigh McLeroy (MA in Cultural Apologetics, Houston Baptist University), writer, speaker, ghostwriter, dog-lover, stops by to talk with David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” about her amazing book, The Beautiful Ache: Finding the God Who Satisfies When Life Does Not.  Leigh is a wonderful writer who weaves together stories from life and Scripture to talk about all of our spiritual journeys.  This book is for anyone whose longings do not match the reality of this world.  This is “the ache” we all experience, but is a sure sign that there is something more.
