The Lanier Center for Archaeology with Steve Ortiz

Steve Ortiz (PhD) directs the Lanier Center for Archaeology at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. Since he was a young man, he has been digging up Israel and teaching students what archaeology has to teach us about the Ancient Near East and the world of Scripture.  Steve fell in love with archaeology as a young boy and with the guidance and encouragement of his father, he has made it his life long pursuit. 

In this podcast he talks about his own archaeological adventures as well as the mission of the Lanier Center for Archaeology.  Dr. Otiz and his colleague, Tom Davis, have the most vibrant and important school for training others in how and why we do these excavations.  They are currently recording inscriptions in Egypt and excavating sites in Israel with other schools and universities.  

The artifacts left behind by civilizations is referred to as ‘material culture. The material culture of the Bible has a great deal to teach us about the world of Abraham and his kin.

Archaeology and Biblical Languages, with Dan Master

Dan Master, Wheaton College

Dr. Daniel Master is Professor of Archaeology at Wheaton College. Since 1992, he has been part of the Leon Levy Expedition to Ashkelon, and in 2016 he began a new project at Tel Shimron in Northern Israel. In this conversation with Dr. Capes, he recalls his beginnings in the biblical languages and their ongoing importance for his own work and for students majoring in archaeology.

“Exegetically Speaking” is a weekly podcast of the friends and faculty of Wheaton College, IL and The Lanier Theological Library. Daniel Master, Tel Shimron

Dr. Daniel Master, Wheaton College

Daniel Master (PhD, Harvard University), Professor of Archaeology at Wheaton College, talks with David Capes about how he became an archaeologist.  He has spent much of his career digging up, processing, and writing archaeological reports on Ashkelon.  In recent days he and his dig partners from various institutions have turned their trowels to Tel Shimron, a large archaeological site just north of the Jezreel Valley about 8 miles west of Nazareth.  Despite Covid-19, the excavation had a full season in 2021.  If you want more information about Tel Shimron, check out the website: www.telshimronexcavations.com.  Dr. Master is always looking for volunteers.  If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at archaeology, why not spent three or six weeks in Israel next summer? It’s hard work, but it’s worth it!

Theology on the Web

Rob Bradshaw’s full time job is librarian at Spurgeon’s College in London. But he also has a passion for making theology available on the Internet.

Rob has digitized 40,000 articles from dozens and dozens of journals.  Some you have heard of.  Some you have not.  But he has done his due diligence to contact the authors and/or their heirs to make sure he has permission to put their work on the web so that people across the world can see it.

In this time of Covid-19 when libraries are closed and resources are scarce, it is great to have access to these articles.  They are cross-referenced by author, publication, topic, etc.

Rob has articles on a variety of disciplines: theology, church history, Old Testament, New Testament, and archaeology.  The website above mentioned above curates and organizes the entire collection of digitized articles.

Now, Rob does this on the side, as a gift to scholars, pastors, and students.  Access to the articles are free, but if you’d like to help him with some of the expenses, leave some money in the tip jar before you go.
