Poetry and Metaphor in Psalm 1

Not long ago I sat down with Travis Wright, a PhD Student at Cambridge University, to discuss some of the beauty and poetry found in Psalm 1. He reads Hebrew beautifully. You get a sense not only of what it means but how it sounds.

We Have a Book Called ‘The Bible’

Last year I had the chance to meet Dr. John Behr (PhD, Oxford). He is a rock star among scholars. He is known around the world as an expert in the Church Fathers. In this episode of “The Stone Chapel” he tells the story of how he came to the Orthodox faith.  After discussing some of the differences between the Orthodox and Protestant faiths, he proposes that one difference is the problem: “we have a book called ‘The Bible’ (‘the Book’).  The fact that we divide it into two parts, the Old Testament and the New Testament, means that we miss something fundamental. This is part one of a two part conversation.

Scribes and Their Remains

Dr. Craig Evans, HBU, and Jeremiah Johnston, Christian Thinkers’ Society, stopped by to record an episode of “The Stone Chapel” about their 2019 edited book Scribes and Their Remains. They take a look at the durability of papyrus in the ancient world and the scribal practices that gave to us what they describe as a “stable” text. Some scholars argue that in the first few centuries scribes practices make the table unstable and untrustworthy. Its an important debate.

The Stone Chapel

Mark Lanier, founder and builder of the Stone Chapel, stopped by to talk with me on “The Stone Chapel” podcast about why he and his sweet wife Becky built it. He tells an amazing story and describes in detail the ornamentation and paintings on the ceilings. It is a replica of a Byzantine chapel that sat on a plane in Turkey (Cappadocia) about 500 AD.

A Brief Conversation with the Founder of the Lanier Theological Library

Recently, I sat down with the founder of the Lanier Theological Library, Mark Lanier, on “The Stone Chapel.” We talked a bit about his vision and hopes for this unique research library, tucked away in Northwest Houston.

Mark and his sweet wife Becky love England and all things British so the library and grounds look a bit like a piece of Oxford has broken off and fallen into the sylvan setting of northwest Houston.
