The Stone Chapel

Mark Lanier, founder and builder of the Stone Chapel, stopped by to talk with me on “The Stone Chapel” podcast about why he and his sweet wife Becky built it. He tells an amazing story and describes in detail the ornamentation and paintings on the ceilings. It is a replica of a Byzantine chapel that sat on a plane in Turkey (Cappadocia) about 500 AD.

A Brief Conversation with the Founder of the Lanier Theological Library

Mark Lanier

Recently, I sat down with the founder of the Lanier Theological Library, Mark Lanier, on “The Stone Chapel.” We talked a bit about his vision and hopes for this unique research library, tucked away in Northwest Houston.

Mark and his sweet wife Becky love England and all things British so the library and grounds look a bit like a piece of Oxford has broken off and fallen into the sylvan setting of northwest Houston.

Rumors of an Early Fragment of Mark

You may already know the outcome of this story, but what you may not know is what happened behind the scenes.

A few years ago rumors of an early fragment of Mark’s Gospel circulated among scholars and interested parties. I sat down with Dr. Craig Evans recently on “The Stone Chapel” to sort out what was true and what was false about the rumors. The fragment is remarkable, but it is not as early as some said at first. He tells an amazing story of intrigue, discovery and perhaps some significant missteps.

Home Again by a Different Route: Finding Resilient Leaders in the Book of Lamentations

Dr. Margaret Diddams

My friend and former boss, Dr. Margaret Diddams, recently came to the Lanier Theological Library for a two week research break to investigate some of our great resources on the book of Lamentations. By training Dr. Diddams, Margaret, is an industrial organizations psychologist and she has noticed a number of similarities between the academic literature on resilient leaders and lament. Her thoughts on the subject are fascinating and helpful. This needs to be a book and with time, I’m sure it will be. With Covid-19 especially, church leaders and others are trying to figure out what’s next. Whether people are being fired, laid off or flaming out, these are some insights you need.

Introducing Michael Thomson

Michael Thomson

A few months ago I sat down with Michael Thomson, acquisitions editor for Wipf & Stock/Cascade, to talk about his journey into academic publishing. He has made his way through the ranks to become one of the rock stars in the industry. In this edition of “The Stone Chapel” Michael details a number of things that writers ought to know about self-publishing and working with an established press like Wipf & Stock. We talk about the demise of the family Christian bookstores in neighborhoods and communities. It has left a mark on the industry.

Michael has a lot of projects he is shepherding now. Watch for more great books and series from Cascade, Wipf & Stock, and Pickwick.
