Interpreting the New Testament through Inscriptions

Dr. Clint Burnett

Clint Burnett (PhD, Boston University) joined David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” to talk about his new book Interpreting the New Testament through Inscriptions (Hendrickson Academic, 2020).  Dr. Burnett discusses what inscriptions are, what they tell us about the world of the New Testament, and how scholars go about dating them to the period.  There are a lot of places where the New Testament and inscriptions come together and Burnett covers them in his book.  Inscriptions related: to the title “Lord;” ancient banquets; imperial oaths and decrees from Caesar; benefactors/benefactresses and overseers; and—everyone’s favorite—calculating numbers and in particular 666 as the number of a man in Revelation.  There are over half a million inscriptions so far discovered in the ancient world and they tell us about the lives of the average individual.

The Second Commandment

Dr. Michael Graves, Wheaton College

Dr. Michael Graves, Armerding Professor of Biblical Studies at Wheaton College, thinks about how a variety of biblical texts help us understand what it means for God to punish the children of those who sin “to the third and fourth generations,” and to show love “to a thousand generations” of those who love him.

“Exegetically Speaking” is a weekly podcast of the friends and faculty of Wheaton College, IL and The Lanier Theological Library. Hosted by Dr. David Capes, it features language experts who discuss the importance of learning the biblical languages—Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek—and show how reading the Bible in the original languages “pays off.” Each podcast lasts between seven and eleven minutes and covers a different topic for those who want to read the Bible for all it is worth.

George W. Truett Theological Seminary

Todd Still, PhD, Dean of Truett Seminary

Todd Still (PhD, Univ of Glasgow) joins David Capes to talk about the mission of George W. Truett Theological Seminary at Baylor University.  Since becoming the dean, Todd Still has watched the numbers of students and the reach of the seminary expand.  While other seminaries are contracting and facing financial difficulties, Truett Seminary is growing and raising more and more scholarship money for its students.  Since its founding in 1991, the seminary has trained 1800 graduates, most of whom are serving in churches in America and around the world.  In days to come, you will likely see Truett Seminary staff and faculty more and more present at the library; but that’s another podcast.  If you’d like to study at Truett or if you know someone who would, contact Dr. Todd Still (Todd_Still@baylor.edu).

Relevance Theory

Dr. Gene Green

Dr. Gene Green is Professor Emeritus of New Testament at Wheaton College and Graduate School, and Dean of Trinity International University – Florida. In this episode, Dr. Green explains what “Relevance Theory” is, how he became interested in its contribution to biblical interpretation, and how it helps us “mind the gap” between “what is said and what is meant” – whether in our own everyday interactions, contemporary cross-cultural conversations, or our attempts to receive ancient texts with good understanding. For instance, what might Jesus mean by being a “friend” in John 15:15.

The Moses Way

Dr. Gib Allen and his wife, Tamie

Dr. Gib Allen joins David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” to discuss his new book The Moses Way: A Pastor-Directed Model to Address Conflict (2020).  “Gib” is a friend and patron of the Lanier Theological Library and has pastored churches for nearly 40 years in Arkansas and Texas.  Not long after beginning his ministry, he discovered that his seminary education had taught him little to nothing about how to deal with conflict in the church.  Over time he talked with leaders, read good books and has come up with an approach any pastor or church leader can follow in order to address conflict redemptively in the church. He does this with a careful reading of how Moses dealt with conflict with the children of Israel on the journey to the Promised Land. Whether you are a pastor or interested layperson, the chances are good your church has faced, is facing or will face conflict serious enough to rock the foundations (21 minutes).
